Emil Preiss enjoyed success as a competitor in the floor exercise and all-around, but his reach to the nation’s gymnastics youth is what made him excel. After emigrating to the U.S. from Germany in 1924, Preiss competed with the Turner Normal College of Indianapolis. A four-year stint coaching the Chicago Turners led him to the head coaching job at the University of Pennsylvania where he instructed for 33 years. During his career, Preiss is recognized as a key contributor to American youth and Junior Gymnastics.
